# Mute your microphone everywhere, with one shortcut

> PerchDeck mutes your default Windows microphone for every app with Ctrl+Shift+Alt+M, with push-to-talk and a live indicator on the notch. Includes a camera mirror.

One big button, or one global shortcut, mutes your default microphone in Windows, so “every app hears silence”. The notch shows whether you are live or muted.

## What it does
- **Mute in Windows itself.** It mutes your default microphone at the system level, so it works in every app. If no microphone is plugged in, it says “No microphone”.
- **Push to talk.** On by default. While muted, hold the shortcut to talk; a quick tap just toggles.
- **You always know.** The notch shows whether your microphone is live or muted, either always (the default) or only when muted.
- **A dot when another app listens.** A green dot on the notch shows while another app is using your camera or microphone. It reads Windows' own privacy records and does not poll.
- **Camera mirror.** Start preview to check framing and lighting. “Only you see this. Nothing is recorded.”

## Shortcuts
- `Ctrl+Shift+Alt+M`: Mute or unmute (hold while muted for push to talk)

All shortcuts can be changed in Settings > Shortcuts.

## Good to know
- The tab is labelled Preview in the dock.
- Voice memos refuse to record while your microphone is muted, and tell you why.
- If you choose “Hide the notch” (a thin line instead), nothing is shown on it, including the microphone state.

## Questions
### Does it mute the microphone in Zoom, Teams and Discord?
It mutes your default microphone in Windows, so it works in every app that uses that microphone. It does not use any app's own mute button.
