# Record a voice memo from any app

> Start and stop a voice memo with Ctrl+Shift+Alt+R from any app. Recordings are compressed, stored on your PC and never uploaded. The notch shows a red dot and the time.

Part of [PerchDeck](https://perchdeck.app/) for Windows. Canonical page: https://perchdeck.app/features/voice-memos

Press the shortcut, say the thing, press it again. The notch shows a red dot, the time so far and a stop button while you record.

## What it does
- **Pause, resume, save or discard.** Up to two hours per recording, saved as compressed audio (WebM/Opus, about 4 KB a second) with the name “Voice memo, <date and time>”.
- **Play back and tidy up.** A progress bar, rename, Show in folder, and delete (it asks twice).
- **Keep as long as you like.** Keep recordings forever (default), or 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. Older ones are deleted with their audio files. Up to 2,000 recordings.

## Shortcuts
- `Ctrl+Shift+Alt+R`: Start or stop recording

All shortcuts can be changed in Settings > Shortcuts.

## Good to know
- It refuses to record if your microphone is muted, and tells you why.
- With “Hide the notch” on, nothing is shown on the notch while you record, so use the shortcut to stop.
- Nothing is uploaded.

## Questions
### Where are my voice memos stored?
On your PC, in PerchDeck's data folder. Use Show in folder on a memo to open it.
